Containerized vs civil-built treatment plants
When a containerized or skid-mounted wastewater plant is the smarter choice, and when a conventional civil-built plant still wins.
4 min read · RTW engineering team
A containerized plant places treatment equipment inside ISO containers or on skids that are built and tested in a factory, then shipped to site ready to connect. A civil-built plant uses concrete tanks constructed on site with equipment installed afterwards.
| Containerized / skid | Civil-built | |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery time | Weeks to a few months | Many months |
| Site work | Foundation slab and connections | Excavation, concrete, extensive installation |
| Quality control | Built and tested in the factory | Depends on site conditions |
| Flexibility | Can be relocated, expanded or rented | Permanent |
| Best capacity range | Small to medium flows, modular for more | Medium to very large flows |
| Lifetime | Long, with coating and maintenance | Very long |
Choose containerized when
- You need treatment quickly — for a new line, a compliance deadline or an emergency.
- The site is remote, temporary or leased.
- You want to pilot a process before committing to a full plant.
- Flows are moderate or growing in steps.
Choose civil-built when
- Flows are large and stable.
- Long hydraulic retention times need big volumes.
- The plant is a permanent part of a large facility.
Because RTW manufactures in-house, we build both — and many projects combine them, with containerized process units alongside civil tanks for equalisation and storage.
